IOC Continues Support for Iranian Athletes: Olympic Scholarships to 2028 for 12 Talents
Good news for the Iranian sports community as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has once again extended its scholarship program to support the country’s top sporting talents. According to the latest information, 12 Iranian athletes, including 6 men and 6 women, have been selected to receive scholarships from this international body until the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
This support program, which has become a tradition before each edition of the Olympic Games, provides a valuable opportunity for athletes nominated to the IOC by their National Olympic Committees. The main goal of these scholarships is to provide financial support to these elite athletes, allowing them to focus more on their training and preparation for the upcoming Olympics.
Significant Increase in Scholarship Amount
One of the significant aspects of this scholarship cycle is the 50% increase in the amount. While athletes benefiting from the scholarship up to the Paris 2024 Olympics received $500 per month, this figure has increased to $750 USD per month for the period leading up to the 2028 Olympics. This notable increase can have a substantial impact on the financial situation and preparation process of athletes, especially for countries like Iran facing economic challenges. The amount will be deposited into the athletes’ accounts in three or four-month installments.
Introduction of Selected Female Athletes for 2028 Scholarship
The National Olympic Committee of Iran has initially announced the names of six female athletes selected to receive the 2028 Olympic Scholarship:
- Mobina Nejad: Taekwondo’s young and decorated star with high hopes for future Olympics.
- Nahid Kiani: Experienced Taekwondo practitioner, also a participant in the Paris Olympics, receiving this scholarship for the second time, indicating confidence in her potential.
- Mobina Fallah: Talented archer in recurve archery striving to establish her place internationally.
- Gisa Baybordi: Worthy representative of Iran in compound archery, motivated to achieve honors at the 2028 Olympics.
- Hanieh Rostamian: Capable pistol shooter aiming to improve her performance through continuous training.
- Fatemeh Mojallal: Hardworking rower training with the goal of qualifying and performing well at the 2028 Olympics.
The names of the six male athletes who will receive this scholarship have not yet been officially announced but are expected to be released by the National Olympic Committee of Iran in the near future.
A Look at the Outcome of the Paris Olympic Scholarships
To understand the importance of these scholarships, it is worth looking back at the previous cycle and the Paris Olympic scholarships. After the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, a 32-month scholarship worth $500 per month was granted to a number of Iranian athletes. Among the women, the following athletes benefited from this financial support:
- Reyhaneh Mobini (Athletics | Long Jump)
- Fatemeh Karamzadeh (Shooting Rifle)
- Elham Hosseini (Weightlifting)
- Nazanin Malaei (Rowing)
- Somayeh Yazdani (Road Cycling)
- Mahla Momenzadeh (Taekwondo)
Although some of these athletes did not qualify for the Paris Olympics, this financial support played a significant role in their continued athletic journey. Notably, Nahid Kiani and Nazanin Malaei, who were also on the Tokyo Olympic scholarship list, were able to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Nazanin Malaei’s brilliance at the Tokyo Olympics highlights the positive impact of these scholarships on athletes’ performance.
Final Stage: IOC Approval
It is important to note that the final list of Iranian athletes receiving the 2028 Olympic Scholarship will be official after review and final approval by the International Olympic Committee. However, the nomination of these 12 athletes by the National Olympic Committee of Iran is a significant step towards supporting them for a strong presence at the world’s largest sporting event.
This scholarship not only helps athletes financially but also provides them with a sense of credibility and extra motivation on the challenging path of Olympic preparation. We hope that this support will ultimately lead to more achievements for Iranian sports at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
